Recommended route to the Liechtensteinklamm

ATTENTION - Due to a rockfall, the gorge Liechtensteinklamm is closed for the entire season 2017!
The Liechtenstein Gorge is about 5km outside the Sankt Johann town centre.

Arrival by car or travel coach

Exit the A10 Tauern Autobahn at the Pongau junction following the signs for the B311 (2-lane highway). Continue for about 6 kilometres, past Bischofshofen, until you reach Sankt Johann. Take the south exit (Knoten Süd). Turn left and continue on the “Grossarler Landstrasse” (2-lane road) toward the Alpendorf and the town of Grossarl. After about 700m turn left and then immediately right, following the Liechtenstein Gorge Road about 3km until you reach the gorge parking lots.


Adequate parking – also for buses – available.

Public Transport

Intercity Train Station St. Johann im Pongau
Westbahn Vienna – Salzburg – Sankt Johann or Munich – Salzburg – Sankt Johann


With the City Bus: departure from the train station through the centre of town to the Plankenau Wirt Hotel. From there you can walk to the entrance of the gorge in 20 minutes along the “Klammweg” (Gorge path).

Return: Citybus as far as the regional district courthouse; from there it is about a 10 minute walk to the train station.

By foot

City centre/train station to the Liechtensteinklamm

Take the Tauern Bicycle Path along the Salzach River, walk takes about 1½ to 2 hours.

From Alpendorf you can take a walk down to the Liechtensteinnklamm (about 20 min).
